Sims Metal has several large shredder sites where ferrous metals are processed to specification, separated and upgraded. These are strategically located to serve customers and our export markets via dock sites.

In addition we have a number of satellite operations throughout England and Wales, which channel supplies in to the larger facilities. These operations integrate ferrous and non-ferrous activities, providing the resources to offer a comprehensive, quality service. Our numerous sites offer a local purchasing service, whilst our supporting logistics network provides a factory collection service. Continuous electronic monitoring of inventories and sales data allows our business to reflect competitive purchase prices for your scrap materials.

The Process
We operate four main processes for cleaning, separating and upgrading of ferrous and non-ferrous metals: Dense Media Separation (DMS); Shredding, Baling and Shearing.

Shredding is the most capital intensive of our activities; our shredders currently produce over 800,000 tonnes pa of fragmented furnace feed, from infeed typically consisting of end of life vehicles and consumer goods.

Dense Media Separation (DMS) the recovery and separation of non-ferrous metals and other products from shredder non-magnetic materials.

Our large baling presses produce high quality low residual chemistry bale for critical quality steel specifications.

Our numerous hydraulic Shears produce clean cut grades of ferrous scrap for steel and foundry markets.
