Under new European directives, producers of Waste Electrical
and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) will be obliged to meet the
costs of recovery and recycling of WEEE. Tough recovery targets
are imposed across a range of categories of WEEE. Sims Recycling
Solutions has taken a positive stance by investing in processing
technology in order to assess best practice recovery operations.
In particular, innovative trials are underway to recover
and market hitherto landfilled waste streams. Our approach
will position Sims Recycling Solutions uniquely in being
able to service the demands of manufacturing industry and
local authorities in a cost effective, environmentally sound
and legislatively compliant manner. As a company we are committed
to becoming the market leaders in the innovative recovery
and recycling of consumer goods. Our UK research will springboard
opportunities for operations in this field across the globe.

Service
As well as WEEE with a high metallic content,
Sims Recycling Solutions is also specialising in difficult
and hazardous waste material for recycling, in particular
Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT). Various techniques are being
utilised to allow us to separate constituent materials
for recycling, such as glass and plastics. Much effort
is being expended on identifying sustainable markets
for separately recovered recyclates. In this way clients
and other stakeholders can be assured of a cost-competitive
solution.

Locations
It is estimated that 200,000 tonnes per annum of WEEE goods arise
from households and are not currently recovered or recycled. The UK Government
has signalled that local authorities will have a key role to play in
the collection of WEEE at Civic Amenity Sites and possibly from kerbside.
The legislation will also apply to commercial (B2B) WEEE. Sims Recycling
Solutions has a network of sites throughout England and Wales and a comprehensive
transport network to support our customers in the removal of their WEEE
goods. We are happy to advise clients on the optimum collection solution.
