Grow Fruit Trees in Malawi
Sims Group UK Limited is committed to minimising any impact on the environment and is delighted to be sponsoring the Alupro initiative ‘Grow Fruit Trees in Malawi’. This innovative project will see over 85,000 new trees planted in Africa over the first two-year period.
Alupro is a not-for-profit organisation which is sponsored by the leading aluminium packaging and recycling companies. Working in conjunction with Ripple Africa, a British charity, Alupro’s ‘Grow Fruit Trees in Malawi’ campaign will see a new fruit tree planted for every tonne of aluminium collected for recycling in the UK.
The Project
The ‘Grow Fruit Trees in Malawi’ project is based in Mwaya, on the shore of Lake Malawi, which will produce improved fruit trees such as mango, orange, lemon and avocado. These trees will be sold both to individuals and to small semi-commercial growers.
Species such as guava and pawpaw, which provide good produce from seed-grown trees, will be added to Ripple Africa’s existing 75 community nurseries, producing the first saplings for planting out in January 2008.
Sims Group is pleased to be part of this valuable project which focuses on encouraging the recycling of aluminium packaging whilst also directly benefiting our planet. |
